According to Grundy County Sheriff Rodney Herring, the chase began after a report was received from Main Stop that a subject had driven from the station without paying for gas. The description of the vehicle involved in the drive-off fit the description of a vehicle being driven by18-year-old Duane Shiner, who is wanted by authorities on a Grundy County felony warrant charging him with first degree tampering: stealing a motor vehicle. Authorities had been alerted on Wednesday that Shiner, who had been hiding in Des Moines, IA, had returned to Trenton and was driving a black Chevrolet Tahoe with one of its windows broken out. That vehicle matched the description of one stolen in Iowa.
Grundy County Deputy Clint Griswold began to pursue Shiner, who initially traveled west on Highway 6 from Main Stop. He then changed direction and began traveling east back into Trenton. He traveled eastbound on Fifth Street to Kavanaugh Street to First Street to Johnson Drive to Second Street to Kitty Street to Ninth Street before traveling north on Highway 65. Grundy County officers pursued Shiner to the Mercer County line. At that point, the actual pursuit stopped, but he was followed to Mercer, where he eluded authorities.
Two persons were with Shiner during the chase, including 21-year-old Patricia Bennett and another subject whose name was not released. That unnamed subject was dropped off in Polk County, IA, where he was detained by authorities there until he could be picked up by his parents. Sheriff Herring said that subject is cooperating with authorities. Iowa authorities are continuing to assist in the search for Shiner and Bennett.
Sheriff Herring said anyone with information on the whereabouts of Shiner or Bennett is asked to contact his office at 359-2828.
