Alert passersby called in a tree fire Friday afternoon, resulting in a best-case scenario for a house on the north side of Trenton.
According to a report by Firefighter Derek Hert, the fire occurred at 101 E. 17th St., occupied by Nikki Taylor, who was not home at the time. When they arrived, firefighters found a small fire at the base of a dead tree that was approximately 15 feet from the house. Flames were moving up the tree and firefighters were able to extinguish it and then use a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no hot spots. There was only slight damage to the tree with no damage to the home, however, it was noted that if passersby had not noticed the fire and reported it, the incident could have been much worse. It is believed that a discarded cigarette caused the fire.
