The Trenton Police Department has received a report of a scam involving the USA Mega Sweepstakes.
A Trenton woman received notice in the mail that she had won $355,000 in the lottery and a check from Evergreene of New York written on Atlantic Bank of New York in the amount of $4,650. She was instructed to deposit the check and return $3,850 of it as a processing fee. The check is not genuine and if she had done so, she would have lost the money she would have paid to the company.
Trenton Police Det. Jerry Smith said one of the red flags about this scam is that all of the companies listed on the check and correspondence have different addresses in different states. Also, he said, if you have not entered a sweepstakes or played a lottery, you cannot win.
In addition to Evergreene and Atlantic Bank, Coast Capital Financial Services of Los Angeles, CA is also involved in the scam. The number to call to contact a claim agent is a Canadian phone number and the letter was mailed from Dublin, Ireland.
