An investigation is under way into the cause of an accident investigated Saturday evening on Kitty Street, while a bicyclist was struck by a car on Friday.
DWI Investigation Under Way
According to Officer Keith Edmonston’s report, the accident occurred when a car driven by Matthew W. Cusick was making a left turn from Seventh Street onto Kitty Street. The vehicle ran off the roadway and traveled approximately 120 feet through two residential lawns. The vehicle struck a telephone junction box before striking an embankment that separated a lawn from the roadway. Both airbags deployed, damaging the vehicle’s windshield.
Cusick sustained cuts and bruises and was disoriented following the accident. He was taken by Grundy County Ambulance to Wright Memorial Hospital.
Cusick, 35, was ticketed for careless and imprudent driving by leaving the roadway and striking a fixed object. An investigation to determine if he was driving while intoxicated is also being conducted.
The vehicle was towed from the scene.
A bicyclist escaped serious injury when pulled into the path of a vehicle on Friday.
According to Officer Derek Miller’s report, William J. Willsworth of Houma, LA was the driver of a vehicle that struck the bicycle, operated by Zack Smith of 812 Haliburton St., on Ninth Street. Willsworth, who was eastbound on Ninth Street near Rural Street, said Smith pulled into his path and though he applied his brakes, he did not have time to stop before striking the bike. Smith said he couldn’t see the vehicle coming due to the sun being in his eyes.
Smith only suffered cuts and bruises, but his bicycle sustained extensive damage.
