Two persons on a motorcycle sustained moderate injuries in an accident Monday afternoon just south of Spickard on Highway 65. According to Sgt. S.K. Skoglund’s report, the motorcycle was driven by Thomas J. Allen of Chariton, IA, with Maria L. Allen, also of Chariton, as a passenger. Several northbound vehicles had slowed to allow another vehicle to make a left-hand turn. Allen lost control of the motorcycle and overturned on the roadway, ejecting both the driver and his passenger. A trailer being pulled by the motorcycle became separated from the motorcycle and struck a car driven by Sherril D. Cox of Princeton from behind. The motorcycle came to rest on the roadway on its side, while Cox was able to bring his vehicle to a controlled stop on the east shoulder.
Both of the Allens sustained moderate injuries and were taken by Grundy County Ambulance to Wright Memorial Hospital in Trenton. Cox was not injured in the mishap and his vehicle sustained only minor damage. The motorcycle sustained moderate damage.
Sgt. Skoglund was assisted by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department, Grundy County Ambulance and First Responders.
Another accident was investigated by Sgt. Skoglund on Saturday on Route Z, about six miles west of Trenton. In that mishap, James D. Davidson of Galt was driving his vehicle southbound at about 6 a.m. when it crossed the center line and went off the east side of the roadway, overturning and coming to rest on its top. The vehicle was totaled.
Davidson sustained moderate injuries and was transported by Grundy County Ambulance to Wright Memorial Hospital in Trenton.
Three accidents were investigated in Mercer County, including one on Sunday morning in which a motorcycle driven by Caleb M. Utterback of Chapel Hill, TN struck a deer traveling across Highway 136, three miles west of Princeton. Utterback, who was eastbound, sustained moderate injuries when the motorcycle rolled on its left side, slid down an embankment on the south side of the highway and then came to rest on its left side. Utterback was taken by Mercer County Ambulance to Harrison County Community Hospital. His motorcycle was damaged extensively.
The accident was investigated by Trooper J.C. Daly, with assistance from Trooper B.R. Hilliard and the Mercer County Ambulance Department.
Around 4 p.m. on Monday, Sgt. Doug Little investigated a mishap on Highway 136, this time five miles east of Princeton. The accident occurred when a truck driven by Matthew W. Howell of Mercer was westbound on Highway 136 and drifted across the north side of the highway. It traveled down an embankment, struck a culvert, traveled across a gravel road, struck a fence and came to rest on its wheels in a field. He was taken by Mercer County Ambulance to Wright Memorial Hospital in Trenton for treatment of moderate injuries. His truck sustained extensive damage.
Sgt. Little was assisted by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department in his investigation.
Trooper Daly was also called to a two-vehicle accident at around 7 a.m. Friday on Formica Street, 15 miles east of Princeton.
According to his report, a truck driven by Wesley D. Lowrey of Princeton and a vehicle driven by Shane J. Nunn of Newtown approached a hillcrest on Formica Street, with Lowrey driving southbound and Nunn driving northbound. The two vehicles met at the hillcrest and struck head-on, with both vehicles coming to rest in the roadway. Lowrey’s vehicle had extensive damage while Nunn’s vehicle was totaled.
Lowrey sustained minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene, while Nunn and a passenger, Megan L. Rainey of Newtown, both had moderate injuries and were taken to Putnam County Memorial Hospital by Mercer County Ambulance.
