It’s not often you can go on the road, win five matches on the mat in two duals combined and return home with a pair of team victories. But, that’s exactly what the Trenton High School wrestling team did on Thursday night.
The Bulldogs had wrestlers at all but two weight classes and that lineup depth led to a 42-27 win over Marceline and a 54-12 victory over Polo at Marceline.
Trenton went 2-2 in matches contested on the mat against Polo and 3-5 in the same scenario against Marceline. But, in each dual, Trenton had wrestler after wrestler get their hand raised without a match as Polo and Marceline each featured lineups ripe with holes.
Despite going just 5-7 in matches on the mat at the event, that record was a bit skewed as some of Trenton’s top wrestlers were handed wins by forfeit. For example Trenton’s two state-ranked wrestlers – Mark Trump, fifth at 182, and Hunter McAtee, fourth at 106, got just one match each at the triangular. McAtee picked up a quality win, pinning Marceline’s Canaan Wright, who is ranked eighth in the state. Trump, meanwhile, picked up a win by fall over Polo’s James Davis in his lone match of the night.
Sam Gibson (170), Coleman Griffin (138) and Brice Gibler (132) had 2-0 nights as well, each getting one win via fall and one via forfeit. Gibson pinned Polo’s Justice Mieirer while Griffin topped Marceline’s Jaxon Schmitt. Gibler defeated Marceline’s Alias Dauber.
Caylub Tyler (120), Gavin Chambers (113) and Allen Airey all fell to Marceline opponents and won by forfeit against Polo. Airey and Tyler were pinned while Chambers lost by a 9-2 decision. Timothy Kempton (152) and Kaden Owen (145) each went 0-2, getting pinned in both duals. It wasn’t an easy night for either as Kempton was tasked with facing Marceline’s Hunter Nelson, ranked seventh in the state at 160, while Owen was opposed by Marceline’s Mason Barnett, ranked seventh in the state at 152, and Polo’s Wyatt Seager, ranked third in the state at 145.
The two dual victories pushed Trenton to 9-4 overall in head-to-head action for the season. The Bulldogs have a quick turnaround, returning to the mat on Saturday at the Plattsburg Tournament.
