With Grace Holcomb sick and not making the trip to the Gallatin Tournament on Tuesday, the Trenton girls’ golf team was only interested in individual results at the Daviess County Country Club.
So the trip for Trenton had to be considered a success as the Bulldogs returned home with the overall tournament winner Werthen Gass in possession of the top individual medal.
Gass shot an 87 on the day, besting runner-up Ally Johnson of Gallatin by two strokes for first place in the 44-golfer field.
Gass turned in a crisp 41 on the front nine, making par on four holes and netting a birdie on the par-four sixth. On the back nine Gass cooled off a bit, but still managed three more pars and a score of 46.
“Werthen had a great day,” Trenton coach Travis Mullenix said. “We’ve had some kids medal at tournaments over the past few years, which is a heck of an accomplishment, but being the overall champion is pretty special. I’m very proud of the way she was able to keep it together down the stretch after a couple of holes where she didn’t putt real well.”
Behind Gass, Trenton got a 114 from Maci Henson, who shot a 57 on both the front and back nines. Oakley Madden rounded out the Trenton effort with a 133, going 66 on the front and 67 on the back.
“Maci had a really good day too,” Mullenix said. “She is hitting the ball farther and her short game has definitely improved. Oakley is real close to taking some strokes off of her score. She just needs a little more consistency in her swing and she’ll get there.”
Trenton’s girls golf team is right back at it again today, traveling south for the Richmond Tournament at Shirkey Golf Course. That event was scheduled to begin a 9 o’clock this morning.
Trenton hosts its final home dual on Monday, taking on Putnam County at 4 p.m.
