Playing in the first regular season conference game for Trenton High School since Nov. 3, 1989, the Lady Bulldog softball team routed Maysville on the road Tuesday night, winning 17-0 in just three innings.
The game marked the first Grand River Conference competition for the school, save for the GRC wrestling tournament in January, and the first conference game ever for the softball program at Trenton.
The Lady Bulldogs made the most of the momentous occasion, blasting the Lady Wolverines. Trenton plated a pair of runs in the top of the first when Taylor Richman drove home Tenna Roberts (running for Salem Croy) and Whitley Richman to give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-0 edge. That would be all Trenton would get in the first, a small inning compared with what was to come.
Lexi Whitaker would lead off the second with a triple and Shayla Woodside followed with a double to give Trenton its third run. Four more would follow in the frame as Woodside scored on an RBI double by Ainsley Tolson and Tolson scored on a single by Croy.
The Lady Bulldogs put the game away with 10 runs in the third inning, a rally highlighted by another RBI double by Tolson, this one hitting off the top of the centerfield fence. Whitaker had an RBI double and Jayden Roeder singled, scoring two runs.
Croy, Whitaker and Tolson all had two hits each and Taylor Richman and Croy each collected three RBIs.
In the circle, Tolson (1-0) picked up the win, shutting out Maysville in three innings. She allowed one hit and struck out five in the victory.
“I was happy with how the girls responded to playing a new opponent,” Trenton Head Coach John Cowling said. “I was happy with how well we hit the ball up and down the lineup.”
The opening night of Grand River Conference play saw all eight teams from the East Division in action. Other games saw Princeton top South Harrison 3-1, Putnam County defeat Milan 11-1 and Polo beat Gallatin 5-3. The Princeton-South Harrison match-up was probably the game of the night. The Lady Tigers trailed 1-0 going into the seventh inning, but plated one run to tie the game before Payton Goodin belted a two-run home run to give Princeton the winning score.
GRC softball will be up and running again on Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs will host Princeton at Griffin Field in Trenton while Polo travels to Milan, South Harrison travels to Maysville and Gallatin travels to Putnam County. All four games are set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Junior Varsity
Trenton’s junior varsity also handled Maysville, topping the Lady Wolverines’ second unit 15-2.
Kennedy Norton had two bases-loaded hits, finishing with four RBIs, and McKayla Blackburn pitched all three innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out six.
“The girls started off a little jumpy at the plate, but did a great job those last two innings being patient and driving the ball when they got the right pitch.” Coach Kameron Cool said. “Defensively, McKayla did a good job on the mound for us tonight and held their lineup in check most of the game.”
