The Mercer girls blasted an overmatched Novinger squad, nearly scoring 100 points in the win on Wednesday night at the Milan Tournament.
Mercer jumped out to a 30-6 lead in the first quarter and rolled over their opponents. Mercer outscored Novinger 24-12 in the second quarter and 32-9 in the third quarter before backing off and scoring just 11 points in the final frame.
Bailey Owens was the leading scorer for Mercer (11-0) with a game-high 31 points. Rayne Kost added 22, Nicole Kost had 17 and Lindsay Wyatt scored 13. Mercer also got seven points from Emily Sample, six from Breanna Main and one from Esabel Holt. Mercer knocked down 16 three-pointers in the game, six from Owens.
The Mercer girls will now play for the Milan Tournament championship on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Mercer Boys 72
Milan Boys 31
The Mercer boys scored a second pool play win at the Milan Tournament as well and will also play for the tournament championship on Saturday.
Mercer ran out to a 21-10 first quarter lead, but Milan hung tough in the second quarter, trimming a point off the Mercer advantage. In the third quarter, however, Mercer blew the game wide open with a 14-3 run. In the fourth, Mercer outscored Milan 22-2.
Galt Porter had 16 points and Trey Wilson scored 15 to lead Mercer (10-1). Bryer Noe and Hunter Shipley each scored nine points and Cash Hartley added eight. Mercer also got six points from Grey Porter, four from Larramie Moore, three from Matt Johnson and two from Alec Patterson.
Mercer plays at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Milan Tournament championship game.
Novinger Boys 90
Grundy R-5 Boys 41
The Grundy boys fell for the second time at the Milan Tournament, relegating them to the consolation final on Friday at 6:15. Grundy was hot from the outside early, but Novinger overwhelmed the Panthers with a 25-13 run in the first quarter. Novinger outscored Grundy in all four quarters, pulling away throughout the contest for a 49-point win.
The Panthers (3-9) were led by Bryson Gann, who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jonathan Stimpson and Isaac Chamberlin added seven points each and Alex Webb had four points, four assists and three steals. Blake Foster gave Grundy four points in the loss.
NE Nodaway Girls 44
Princeton Girls 28
The Princeton girls were eliminated from the South Harrison Tournament on Wednesday night, suffering a loss in the consolation semifinals to Northeast Nodaway.
Individual statistics for the Lady Tigers (4-8) were not available as of press time.
Princeton’s boys will be in action tonight, taking on Putnam County in Bethany at 6 o’clock.
