A focus on bike safety and fun while bicycling are the focus of a Bike Rodeo to be held Saturday, May 30 in Trenton geared to kids ages three to 12. The event is sponsored by Trenton High School Key Club with assistance from the Grundy County Health Department, Kiwanis, Trenton FFA, Trenton Middle School FCCLA and the Trenton Police Department.
The Bike Rodeo kicks off at 11 a.m. in the front parking lots and circle drive of the high school and will run through 1 p.m. It is expected to take around 30 minutes to complete all stations. Those attending are asked to use the entrances to the parking lot off Normal Street.
The Grundy County Health Department will be conducting car seat checks and ensuring that each child has a properly fitted helmet. Participants must wear a helmet to participate and are encouraged to bring their own helmet with them. If they do not have one, the health department will provide a helmet while supplies last.
Participants will be able to register their bike with the Trenton Police Department which can help return the bike to its rightful owner in the event of theft. There will be individuals there to do an overall bike inspection and make recommendations for maintenance that needs to be done. There will also be several stations where youth can learn and/or practice key bicycling skills such as safely starting and stopping, maneuvering around hazards, driveway approaches, visual awareness and balance. An obstacle course where participants can practice their combined skills as well as a course for skilled riders will be available.
There will be a tricycle area for younger kids as well as a coloring station provided by FCCLA.
The Trenton Kiwanis Club will be providing hot dogs and a bottle of water for participants and there will also be a drawing for a bicycle for kids who complete all stations at the rodeo.
All parents are encouraged to bring their children out for a fun time and to help them become better bikers.
