The Trenton High School junior varsity basketball teams were in action on Monday night, playing host to Putnam County in Trenton. Both the Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs picked up victories on their home floor as the girls won 38-25 and the boys won 49-28.
Lady Bulldogs
The girls game saw Trenton get off to a bit of a slow start as Putnam County led throughout the first half and held a 16-10 advantage at halftime. Trenton would battle back in the third quarter, however, using full-court pressure to take control of the game. The Lady Bulldogs went on a 15-1 run and led Putnam with three quarters in the books, 25-17. Trenton then pulled away in the final frame, going on to win by 13 points.
Tenna Roberts led the way for Trenton with 10 points and three steals and Whitley Richman added nine points and five rebounds. Ally Ockenfels had seven points and three rebounds and Lana Raymo finished with four points. Daryian Otto, Jaylen Neff, Jordain Oshel and Lexie Tolson all had two points each.
“This was a good team win, especially with all eight girls scoring,” Lady Bulldogs’ Coach John Cowling said. “I was really happy with our defensive intensity in the second half and the girls did a great job of finding the open girl on offense.”
With the win, the Trenton JV girls improved to 3-0 on the season.
Bulldogs
The Trenton boys ran out to a 10-5 first quarter lead and held a 26-17 advantage at halftime. The Bulldogs used a 16-3 run in the third quarter to put the game on ice and cruised through the fourth, winning by 21 points.
Kail McCarter had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists and Spencer Harris had 11 points and eight rebounds to pace the Bulldogs. Brice Dillon added seven points, Colton Ellis had six, Jonathan Lamp had six, Connor Cotton had four, Tucker Franklin had two and Trent Crawford and Aaron Anderson each scored one point. Anderson added five steals.
“All of the boys played well tonight,” Bulldogs’ Coach Adam Clark said. “It was a complete team effort. The boys were in control of all four quarters. Putnam made a run at us in the second quarter, however, the boys kept their focus and took care of business at the charity stripe. We went 10-of-14 on free throws just in the second quarter and were 15-of-23 for the game. Our defensive pressure was very good and we were able to force several turnovers for scores. At both ends of the floor the boys rebounded well. We also had nine assists on the night and that shows how unselfish the boys played tonight.”
The Trenton JV boys improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.
Both Trenton junior varsity squads will return to the court on Friday, Dec. 13, traveling to Jamesport to take on the Tri-County High School basketball teams in a doubleheader. Action tips off with the girls’ contest at 6 p.m. and the boys’ match-up will follow.
