Trenton’s junior varsity football team had some trouble holding on to the football on Monday night and it cost them as Brookfield handed the Bulldogs a 38-20 loss at C.F. Russell Stadium.
Trenton put the ball on the turf six times, losing three of them, and had a fourth turnover on an interception at the goal line.
Brookfield struck first in the contest with a one-yard touchdown run by Seth Speichinger, who would finish with three rushing touchdowns and a touchdown pass. Trenton was quick to respond, marching down the field with a drive capped by Logan Shuler’s five-yard touchdown run. The difference in the game was Brookfield’s two-point conversion, which Trenton failed to attain. The visitors led 8-6.
Things went downhill quickly from that point, however, as Brookfield reeled off 22 unanswered points, taking advantage of Trenton’s turnover issues. The Bulldogs would finally score again late in the third quarter on a 66-yard run by Jonathan Lamp. Shuler carried in the two-point conversion and Trenton had the lead cut to 30-14.
The teams traded scores in the fourth quarter as Brookfield answered Trenton’s touchdown with one of its own on the ensuing possession. Lamp then scored again from 66-yards out for Trenton. The Bulldogs’ two-point try failed and no one would score the rest of the way as Brookfield picked up the 38-20 victory.
The Bulldogs’ JV squad will look to bounce back from the loss next Monday, facing another Linn County school in Marceline. The road game in Marceline is set for a 6 p.m. kick off and will be Trenton’s final JV game of the season.
