Lady Bulldogs Come To Life, Defeat Hamilton, 5-1

Aug 28, 2012 | Softball, Sports & Recreation

Early on in the Trenton Lady Bulldogs’ first home game of the season on Monday night it appeared the team that ended the Lady Bulldogs’ season at the district tournament last year was going to hand Trenton its first loss of this season. Through two and two-thirds innings the visiting Hamilton Hornets held Trenton to just a single hit and led the Lady Bulldogs 1-0.

Trenton would get their revenge for the way last season ended, however, as the Lady Bulldogs outscored Hamilton 5-0 down the stretch to pick up a 5-1 win and move to 2-0 on the season.
Things began to turn around for Trenton in the third inning when Maddie Hooyman reached base with a bunt single. Hooyman stole second and then scored on an RBI triple by Madi Trump. Trump then scored on a line-drive single by Scotlin Hurley and after stealing second, she scored on a single to left by Kate Lowrey. The flood gate had opened for the Lady Bulldogs.
Trenton tacked on two more runs in the sixth when a single by Avery Whitaker and a walk by Cassidy Cotton got the offense rolling again. Makaila Capeder advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Megan Lynch delivered a pinch hit RBI, scoring Whitaker. Mallory Hooyman then delivered a sacrifice fly to score Tosha Wilson, who was running for Cotton.
The offensive outburst was more than enough as Hurley controlled Hamilton throughout the game. After yielding a run in the first inning, Hurley held the Lady Hornets scoreless the rest of the way, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out eight. The Lady Bulldogs’ defense was solid behind Hurley, committing no errors.
The win moved Trenton to 2-0 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs will be back on the diamond tonight as they play host to Lawson at Griffin Field. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
The Trenton junior varsity was also in action against Hamilton and drew a 3-3 tie in five innings. Mallory Hooyman threw all five frames, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out six. Hooyman also had a double and a run scored. Wilson added a hit, walk and run scored and Ally Ockenfels gave Trenton an RBI triple and a run scored. Lexi Tolson had a hit in the game as well, driving in two runs. The JV is now 0-1-1 on the season and will be in action against Lawson tonight as well, following the varsity game.
