The match began with doubles play, something coach Mike Bosley felt didn’t do his team any favors.
“We started with doubles play,” Bosley said. “That hasn’t been our strong point with Chillicothe.”
Bobbie Lovell and Elizabeth Hoffman played in the number one doubles spot and got off to a good start. The duo took a 6-3 win in the first set to jump out to an early advantage.
The lead would be shortlived, however, as Chillicothe’s number one doubles team battled back to take the second set, 6-2. In the deciding third set it was all Chillicothe as Lovell and Hoffman fell, 6-0.
Kimby Brown and Alyssa Dougan didn’t have very much luck in their doubles match as they fell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Lindsay Creason and Mackenzie Hall fell 6-3 in their first set and lost a close one in the second set, 7-5.
Heading into singles play, Trenton trailed 3-0 and needed to win five out of six matches.
The Lady Bulldogs had some girls come close, but were unable to get a win.
Bobbie Lovell and Kimby Brown lost close matches to seal the win for Chillicothe and end three other matches that were in progress.
“We were down 3-0 going into singles play,” Bosley said. “We got five matches started before they clinched the fifth win.”
Lovell lost 6-4, 7-5 in a very close match with her Chillicothe opponent. Brown also lost a narrow one, falling in a third set tiebreaker by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
Dougan was in the middle of a third set match when play was stopped due to Chillicothe earning the clinching fifth win. Dougan took the first set, 6-0, fell in the second, 6-4, and was trailing in the third 1-0.
Creason had also started play, but no score had been recorded.
Hoffman had also started her match with Chillicothe’s Ellyn Turner, who was the district singles champion. Hoffman lost the first set, 6-3, but rallied to take the second by a score of 7-5. The two were deadlocked at 3-3 in the third set when play was stopped.
“Liz said she saved her best match for last,” Bosley said. “She just didn’t get to finish it.”
Trenton finished the season with a 9-9 record in duals.
