The second annual North Central Missouri College Foundation High School Holiday Shoot-Out kicked off on Wednesday. The three-day event features a total of 23 games at the Ketcham Community Center. There were eight games held on Wednesday including a double overtime girls’ contest between Putnam County and Chillicothe.
NCMC Shoot-Out Gets Underway
The shoot-out began with the Green City boys holding off the Plattsburg boys, 54-49, after leading the contest 34-17 at halftime. The Green City girls beat Plattsburg by 23 points, 64-41.
The third game ended with a 25-point win by Newtown-Harris over the Princeton boys, 66-41. The Princeton girls were able to use good interior play to best the Newtown-Harris Lady Tigers, 43-34.
In the evening games, Putnam County took two games from Chillicothe. The Putnam boys defeated Chillicothe, 54-45, while the Lady Midgets survived double overtime to beat the Lady Hornets, 59-55
In the final two games of the opening day, the Trenton boys lost to Richmond, 62-49. The Lady Bulldogs lost to Richmond, 51-50.

The Golden Gophers opened up a 10 point first quarter lead thanks in large part to a quick start by Matt Ayers, who scored 10 first quarter points. Ayers finished with a game high 21 points including a pair of three pointers and 3-of-4 shooting from the foul line.
At halftime Green City ran their lead to 17 points, 34-17. In the third quarter Plattsburg battled their way back into the contest thanks to nine point by Pierre Stone. Heading into the final quarter of play Green City led by only two points.
Green City went on to win despite hitting only 6-of-12 free throws.
Stone finished with 17 points to lead Plattsburg. Trey Atkinson chipped in with 12 points. Joining Ayers in double digits were Jesse. Estrada and Jeremiah Tarver both with 12 points.

The Green City girls got off to a fast start against Plattsburg, outscoring them16-9 in the first quarter. Chelsea Rouse converted 8-of-9 free throws on her way to a 15 point night.
At halftime the Lady Golden Gophers led, 33-24. Green City managed to keep the Lady Tigers at arm’s length by outscoring them by three in the third quarter.
Chelsea Rouse and Cloe Phillips led Green City with 15 points each. Miranda Brinsa chipped in 13 points.
Melanie Barnes scored 10 points in the first half, but Green City held her to just three points in the second. Barnes finished with 13 points. Bailey Pope added 11 points for the Lady Tigers.

Quickness and solid outside shooting helped the Newtown-Harris boys get by Princeton.
Newtown hit a pair of three pointers in the closing minutes of the first quarter to grab a four point lead.
Newtown gave themselves breathing room with under two minutes to play in the half when they went on a mini run, outscoring Princeton 8-0 to close out the half. Newtown went into halftime with a 36-20 lead.
“I thought we were a little rusty early,” Head Coach Tim Cool said. “We were able to hit some perimeter shots to get in a good rhythm late in the first half.”
In the second half, Newtown kept Princeton at arm’ s length and finished with a 25-point win.
KJ Cool of Newtown finished the game with five three pointers and a game high 21 points. Andy Busick added 17 points for Newtown as they improved to 8-1.
Cory Teeter scored eight points to lead Princeton as they fall to 2-5 on the season.
“We were down by eight points with 1:20 left in the first half and they hit some three pointers and we missed some easy shots,” Princeton Head Coach Dave Richman said. “We went into halftime down 16 points. We played a better third quarter but we dug too deep of a hole.”

A solid second quarter by Samantha Brewer helped the Princeton Lady Tigers get the best of Gilman City.
Brewer’s six points in the second quarter helped the Lady Tigers outscored Gilman City, 16-9. At halftime Princeton led the Lady Hawks, 24-19.
Monica Wilson accounted for most of Gilman City’s offense, scoring a game high 19 points. In the end, Princeton’s inside game proved to be the difference in the game as they outscored the Lady Hawks, 35-15, in the paint.
Christy Hart led Princeton with 17 points and Brewer chipped in with 10 points. The two post players also pulled in 13 combined rebounds.
“We played good defense and controlled the boards.” Head Coach Bill Goodin said.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter – the two teams finished the opening quarter with a combined 12 points. In the second quarter shooting picked up for both teams as the Putnam County boys took a 25-21 lead into halftime.
Torey Weston led the charge for the Midgets with 11 points in the second quarter. Weston finished with a game high 20 points.
In the second half, Weston’s teammate Jesse Hinkle hit 7-of-8 free throws on his way to an 11-point second half. Hinkle finished the game with 15 points.
Heading into the fourth quarter Chillicothe trailed by two points. The Hornets were paced by Bryce Young and Jacob Fellhoelter, the duo finished with a combined 26 points. Young had scored eight in the third quarter but managed a lone free throw in the fourth to finish with 12 points. Fellhoelter ended the game with 14 points.

The first half featured runs by both teams. In the first quarter Chillicothe outscoring the Lady Midgets, 16-6. Putnam County evened the game up at halftime by outscored Chillicothe, 16-6, in the second quarter. Brittany Casady carried the Lady Midgets in the first half – scoring all six first quarter points and 13 of the Lady Midgets 22 first half points.
Equally as impressive was the play of Carole Myer of Chillicothe, who accounted for 10 of the Lady Hornets 22 points in the first half. Myers led the Lady Hornets to a four point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Putnam County battled back and tied the game at 43-43.
In the two overtime Chillicothe’s Kerri Cook took control with eight of the Lady Hornet’s 12 points. The Lady Midgets got most of their overtime points from three players. B. Casady had eight, Hilary Mason had six points and Tessa Casady added five in the extra time.
The first over time ended tied at 47 but in the second over time Putnam County outsocred the Lady Hornets, 12-5.
B. Casady finished with a game high 22 points and was the only Lady Midget in double digits. Chillicothe got 19 points from both Myers and Cook.
