Panthers Winning High Scoring Games Early On
Two games into the Grundy R-5 fall baseball season offense hasn’t been an issue for the Panthers. The defensive side of things is another story.
That hasn’t kept Grundy from winning, however, as the Panthers picked up an 11-10 win over Linn County on Friday, Aug. 27, and an 18-12 victory over Bucklin-Macon County on Monday.
The season-opening win over Linn County in Galt came on a walk-off single by Brett Otto. With the game tied at 10-10 in the bottom of the seventh, Otto roped a two-out single to plate the winning run.
Otto had three hits and two RBIs while Aiden Rains tallied three hits as well and scored three runs. Zach Cross and Corbin Axtell each had two hits and scored three runs. Mason Rayl and Cole Peterson each had two hits in the win as well.
Rains started for the Panthers, throwing four innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out nine. Axtell, who threw the final two-thirds of an inning without allowing a run, was the winning pitcher after the walk off.
Monday, Grundy was locked in another high-scoring contest on the road against Bucklin-Macon County. The Panthers plated nine runs in the top of the first and another nine in the next five innings combined to pick up their second win in as many games.
Rayl led the offense with three hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Axtell and Otto each had two hits, three runs and two RBIs to back Rayl.
On the hill, Axtell had a bit of a rough go, allowing six runs, four earned, on two hits and eight walks while striking out four in one and two-thirds innings. Hunter Miller followed, faring only marginally better, but Rayl fired the final two frames allowing just one run on one hit and two walks while striking out three.
The 2-0 Panthers are back in action tonight (Friday) traveling to LaPlata for action.
