Bulldogs In The Middle Of The Pack At Event
In one week, the Trenton High School boys golf team checked off two big goals it set for itself at the beginning of the season. One was to break 200 as a team in a dual, which they did at a home quad on Monday. The other was to break 400 as a team at a tournament. Thursday at the Lawson Tournament, the Bulldogs achieved that goal as well.
Behind a trio of players breaking 100, Trenton came around the 18-hole layout at the Hidden Valley Golf Course with a team score of 399. That mark placed Trenton seventh in a 14-team field at the Lawson Tournament.
“It was a real good day for the boys,” coach Travis Mullenix said. “It’s been a goal of ours to break 200 on nine and 400 on 18 as a team and we’ve been able to accomplish both. Now we are looking to set some new ones.”
Trenton got a big boost toward hitting their goal with three players turning in sub-100 scores. Brycin Loyd led the way with a score of 92, tying him for 13th individually at the tournament. Loyd had a stretch of five straight holes on the back nine where he carded a four or better. That run saw him collect two pars and a birdie. His back-nine total was 42 after shooting a 50 on the front nine.
Chase Otto followed with a score of 93 — one stroke off of his teammate’s pace. Otto collected three pars on the day, shooting a front-nine 47 and a back-nine 46. Gavin Roeder added a score of 96, using a front-nine 49 and back-nine 47 to arrive at his total.
“Brycin had a great day,” Mullenix said. “I’m very proud of how he is coming along and maturing as a golfer. Chase also played extremely well. He is doing a great job as a first-year golfer. Gavin didn’t have his ‘A’ game today, but still managed a decent score for himself, which shows how much he has improved.”
With that trio combining for 281, Trenton had some breathing room with its fourth score to stay under 400. Preston Harris would card a 118 for Trenton’s fourth score and that was just enough to keep the team under 400 at 399. Patrick Behen was also in varsity action at the tournament, shooting a score of 120. Harris carded a 59 on both the front and back nines, while Behen shot a 60 on both sides to reach his total.
Richmond won the event with a team score of 340, besting runner-up Higginsville’s score of 351. Cameron was third with a mark of 367 and Lawson and Mid-Buchanan rounded out the top five with scores of 369 and 394 respectively.
Trenton was back in tournament action on Friday at the Spartan Invitational in Richmond and will be at the Grand River Conference Tournament in Cameron on Monday before a make-up dual with Chillicothe at the Green Hills Golf Course on Tuesday closes out the regular season.
