Newtown-Harris Board Hires Personnel

May 13, 2020 | Headline News

The Newtown-Harris R-2 Board of Education took action on several items during a meeting on Monday night.
According to information provided by Superintendent Lucas McKinnis, the board voted to hire Amy Hall as the Family and Consumer Sciences instructor as well as Cari Brundage as the art instructor for the 2020-21 school year. The resignation of special education teacher Josie Hinkle was accepted and Caleb Fairley, Johannes Oaks and Sarah Garcia were hired as summer workers.
It was announced that June 1 will be the start of the first session of summer school programing, which will run through June 12. Session II will be from June 22 to July 2. McKinnis said there is a possibility the sessions could be conducted in person, but the district is delaying an assessment at this time. Two summer programming trips are also planned in July, situations permitting.
Students will be able to turn in computers, books and hard copy homework on May 18 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the school. McKinnis said that assignments and student work for the 2019-20 year will no longer be required as of May 15, which is officially the last day of school.
The district is reviewing recommendations from MSBA regarding return-to-school practices and will create a plan that McKinnis said would “reflect concern for students and their families as well as Newtown-Harris staff.”
There was discussion regarding virtual education efforts during the COVID-19 situation as well as propane bids for the 2020-21 school year. It was announced that bus inspections were to be held on Tuesday and that McKinnis is waiting for a response from the district website provider regarding upgrades.
Approval was given to the list of students who will be attending vo-tech school next year as well as to a cooperative athletic agreement with the Grundy R-5 School District.
The next meeting of the board is scheduled for Monday, June 8.
