Update On Bethany Shooting

Apr 7, 2020 | Headline News

A man who was shot in Bethany on Sunday is in stable condition in a Des Moines, IA hospital.
Bethany Police Chief Bryan Holloway said the victim in the shooting that took place Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel is in stable condition following emergency surgery. The victim, identified as William C. Philley in a probable cause statement, was shot multiple times in the chest, allegedly by Jackson M. Miesse, a 21-year-old Dallas, TX man. Holloway said Miesse had come to Bethany on a Jefferson Bus Line bus and had no family members or contacts in the community. The shooting, Holloway said, appears to have been random, with no known motive.
Following the shooting, Miesse fled on foot and still had the weapon in his possession when he was apprehended. He is charged with first degree assault-serious physical injury or special victim, a class A felony; armed criminal action, an unclassified felony; and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, a class D misdemeanor.
Miesse was arraigned in Harrison County associate division court on Monday, entering a plea of not guilty. He is being held on $100,000 cash-only bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday for a bond hearing.
