Stanberry Turns Tables On Trenton

One Week After Defeating Stanberry On The Road, Bulldogs Suffer GRC Loss
In the 2016-2017 season, Trenton High School’s first season in the Grand River Conference, the Bulldogs defeated Stanberry in a battle of the league’s two division champions. The win gave Trenton its first of three-straight GRC championships. One week later, in a regular season match-up, Stanberry avenged the loss with a victory on Trenton’s floor. There was no conference title on the line in the second meeting, thankfully.
Flash forward four years and, as has been the case in every year since, the two teams squared off twice in the span of a week. Like that first season, Trenton and Stanberry split this season. After Trenton took a 47-32 victory in the regular season meeting last week, Stanberry knocked off the Bulldogs 60-37 on Saturday at the Grand River Conference Showcase in King City.
The victory marked Stanberry’s first win over Trenton in a GRC crossover contest, though this was the first time the two squads met without a conference title on the line. Trenton won the GRC East Division in each of the past three seasons before defeating West Division champions Stanberry in the crossover contest for the overall league crown. This year, however, both schools finished runner-up in their respective divisions.
Trenton trailed 18-13 after the first quarter of Saturday’s contest in King City, but the Bulldogs clawed to within 31-28 by halftime. Trenton’s offense dried up in the second half, however, as Stanberry limited the Bulldogs to just six points in the third quarter and a mere three in the fourth.
“The girls played hard, but we were a half step slow the entire game,” Trenton coach Kameron Cool said. “A lot of credit to Stanberry for making adjustments and hitting shots. We just couldn’t find any rhythm and ended up struggling on both ends of the floor.”
Trenton was paced in the loss by 14 points from Maci Moore. Lexi Whitaker added 11 and McKayla Blackburn scored seven. Mallory Sole and Kendall Crowley each had two points and Gracyn Rongey finished with one.
Trenton fell to 13-9 overall with the loss. The Bulldogs will be at Cameron tonight (Tuesday). Tip time is scheduled for 6 o’clock.
