Bulldog Girls Have To Forfeit Game At Maysville
The Trenton High School girls basketball team walked off the court at Maysville on Monday night with the scoreboard showing the Bulldogs as 40-29 winners.
Just 16 hours later, that was no longer the case.
The official record will show Trenton fell to Maysville by a final score of 1-0 after Trenton inadvertantly used a player for four quarters of a junior varsity contest and three more quarters in the varsity game. The Missouri State High School Activities Association sets a limit of six quarters per night for each player.
Trenton discovered the error on Tuesday morning and self-reported to MSHSAA and Maysville High School before forfeiting the contest.
“During last night’s (Monday) junior varsity-varsity girls basketball contests at Maysville, Trenton High School played an individual player seven quarters, which is one quarter above the allowable limit set by the Missouri State High School Athletic Association,” Trenton athletic director Wes Croy said in a statement via email. “Because of this, Trenton High School has self-reported the error to MSHSAA and forfeited the game to Maysville. Our athletic department and district would like to apologize to Maysville High School, the Grand River Conference, MSHSAA and our fans for this oversight.”
Maysville athletic director Matt Blythe went out of his way to commend Trenton on its handling of the situation. The Wolverines were unaware an infraction had been made by the Bulldogs until Trenton reported it to them.
“A mistake was made in the heat of the game,” Blythe said. “Coach (Kameron) Cool was trying to get varsity playing time for his girls. I respect Coach Cool, Wes Croy and the administration for the self-reporting. Coach Cool could have let the infraction go unnoticed, but he showed courage and respect for the game and has taught a lesson to his team on being honorable.”
Trenton was able to overcome the absence of leading scorer Maci Moore in the make-up game on Monday night. Moore was out of the lineup with an illness, making the final score closer than it could have been. With Tuesday’s discovery, however, that point became moot. All statistics accumulated individually in the contest were erased by the forfeit as if the game was never played.
The added loss dropped Trenton to 13-8 overall and pushed their final GRC East Division record to 5-2. At 5-2, Trenton still finishes runner-up in the East Division as the third-place school, Polo, has a 5-3 conference mark.
The Bulldogs will take on West Division runner-up Stanberry on Saturday at the GRC Showcase in King City. That game will tip off at 3 p.m.
JUNIOR VARSITY
Trenton won the junior varsity contest with Maysville 41-20. Gracyn Rongey had 11 points, Rebecca Urich had eight, Jenna Reeter had six and Morgan King and Kaylynn Stanton each scored five. Trenton also got four points from Hannah Bowe and two from Mallory Sole.
