The Trenton High School girls wrestling team was at its second-ever district tournament over the weekend, traveling to Kearney.
As was the case last year, Trenton did not push any female wrestlers through to state. The Bulldogs sent four wrestlers to the event and, despite the season ending for all four, Trenton did have two wrestlers push through to the second day of the tournament as Libby Fewins and Faith Baker each finished 3-2.
Fewins picked up wins by fall in the preliminaries and the first round to advance to the quarterfinals of the 166-pound bracket before falling by pin to a wrestler from Truman High School. Fewins bounced back with a win by fall over a Park Hill grappler in the consolation bracket, but lost in the following round by fall to end her tournament.
“Libby has a lot to be proud of,” Trenton coach Charlie Bacon said. “Friday night Libby came out and won her first two matches by pin over some really good opponents, which advanced her to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Libby lost to a really talented wrestler from Truman High School. On Saturday, Libby came out and got a huge pin over Madison Germany from Park Hill High School. It was a really exciting match. Libby was up by four points before getting turned to her back. Instead of giving up, she really showed what she was made of and fought off her back to go ahead and win the match by pin.
“Libby fell short in her last match of the day but should be extremely proud of her 3-2 finish. She was the team captain both her junior and senior years and finished this season with a 20-6 record. To say we will miss her next year is an understatement.”
Baker, meanwhile, picked up a pair of preliminary wins by fall at 152 before losing to a wrestler from Liberty North to bounce her to the consolation bracket. There, Baker rebounded with a win by fall before being eliminated with a loss by fall in her next match.
“Coming back on Saturday, we knew Faith would have to win three matches to make it to Columbia,” Bacon said. “On Saturday she opened the day with a huge pin over her Lawson opponent, but fell short in her last match of the day as she finished the tournament with a 3-2 record. Faith is going to do some big things in her next two years.”
Also in action for Trenton at the tournament were Ally Yoder (130) and Kaitlee Lovell (135), both of whom went 0-2 on Friday to end their seasons.
“I was so proud of the way our four girls represented Trenton High school at this tournament,” Bacon said. “It was an amazing opportunity and the girls wrestled so hard throughout the tournament.
