Bulldogs’ Defense Clamps Down, Limits Stanberry To 32 Points In Victory
The Trenton High School girls basketball team rode its defense to a victory on Friday night, defeating Stanberry on the road, 47-32.
Trenton fell behind 13-9 in the opening quarter of play, but the Trenton defense took over from that point on. Stanberry was limited to just four points in the second quarter and five in the third. During the two-quarter stretch, Stanberry connected on just four total field goals.
Trenton’s offense, meanwhile, did just enough to give the Bulldogs control of the contest. Trenton got 15 points in the second quarter as Maci Moore shook loose for nine of the points in the frame. Trenton pushed the lead to 32-22 by the end of the third quarter and outscored Stanberry 15-10 over the final eight minutes to seal the victory.
“I’m very proud of how the girls responded after that first quarter,” Trenton coach Kameron Cool said. “Stanberry hit shots early and we dug in over the next couple of quarters defensively. The girls played really hard to earn a tough road win.”
Moore finished with a game-high 18 points and Lexi Whitaker followed with 12 points. Trenton also got seven points from Chandler Lynch and six from McKayla Blackburn. Two points each from Kendall Crowley and Gracyn Rongey rounded out the Trenton total.
With the victory, Trenton moved to 13-7 overall on the season. Trenton was in make-up action at Maysville on Monday to close out the Grand River Conference East Division play. The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, likely battling Stanberry once again in the GRC Showcase.
Barring an unlikely Worth County loss to Pattonsburg, Stanberry will slot into the second spot in the Grand River Conference’s West Division. That will set up the rematch between Trenton and Stanberry at the GRC Showcase being held in King City this year. Trenton sits second in the GRC East Division standings.
Trenton and Stanberry have matched up in every single GRC crossover contest since the league started featuring such match-ups in 2016. Trenton topped Stanberry for the overall league title in softball and basketball during the first three years of crossover match-ups. The Bulldogs also topped Stanberry in softball last fall when the two teams met as the second-ranked teams in their respective divisions.
In all, Trenton is 7-0 against Stanberry in crossover contests in basketball and softball combined.
