THS Girls Victorious In Senior Night Matchup

Feb 5, 2020 | Basketball, Sports & Recreation

Time after time after time the Trenton Bulldogs tossed the ball inside to Maci Moore. Time after time after time she shot and scored.
The Putnam County Midgets had no answer for Trenton’s star forward on Tuesday night. Moore put up 29 points and 10 rebounds, leading Trenton to its third-straight win – this one a 54-26 victory at home in the THS gym.
“Maci is great at finding space,” Trenton coach Kameron Cool said. “She works incredibly hard at studying the game and knowing where to go on the floor. Our girls’ spacing has been great and our passing has been great. The other four girls have to be where they need to be so Maci can get those opportunities.”
In the three-game THS win streak, Moore has elevated her game to a level impressive even for her usual lofty standards. She has scored 98 points in the three games combined, an average of 32.7 points per contest.
“On offense, our ball movement is working more so the defense shifts,” Moore said of the reasoning behind her historic stretch. “Then the post gets more looks inside; just moving the ball and moving it fast.”
Moore was getting plenty of looks inside against the Midgets, connecting on her first seven attempts in the paint. She had 10 points in the first quarter alone and 21 by halftime. Trenton opened the game on a 15-0 run, punctuated by a McKayla Blackburn three-pointer. The Bulldogs led 17-3 after one quarter and 38-16 at halftime.
Trenton mostly cruised in the second half, though the Bulldog defense remained as strong as ever. Putnam County generated just five points in both the third and fourth quarters.
It all added up for a memorable Senior Night for the four Bulldog seniors. Blackburn and Lexi Whitaker have been with program all four years of their high school careers, playing minutes in some of the program’s biggest games. Allena Allen and Kendall Crowley were also honored, having returned to the program this year for their senior seasons.
“McKayla and Lexi, starting with their freshman year, are going to be some of the winningest players in Trenton history,” Cool said. “And then I am so excited that Kendall and Allena came back out because they are multi-sport athletes, great leaders and great teammates. All four of them collectively have been great leaders for our team this year.”
Behind Moore, Whitaker added eight points and seven assists and Teya Cooksey had six points. Blackburn added five points, three steals and three assists. Trenton got four points from Crowley and two points and six assists from Chandler Lynch.
The win pushed Trenton to 12-7 overall and 5-1 within Grand River Conference play.
The Bulldogs are on the road on Friday, traveling to face Stanberry, who at the moment looks like the opponent for Trenton at the GRC Showcase once again. Should the two teams hold their current positions in their respective division standings, they will face off when the conference crosses over for the fourth year in a row. This year, however, will likely be the first time their crossover match-up is not for the league title as both teams currently sit second in the division standings.
Tipoff in Stanberry is scheduled for 6 p.m., following a JV matchup.
