The Grundy County Breast Cancer Support Group was the topic of a program presented at the Thursday, Jan. 16 meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Dave Bain was the program chairman.
Cindy Jennings and Ruby Walker presented information about the group, which was officially formed in February 2018 to provide assistance to those in Grundy County diagnosed with breast cancer. Mrs. Walker noted that 14 women in Grundy County are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, which is one of the highest rates in the state. The local support group has several services available, providing monetary assistance through gas cards as well as a bag of items both women said they found useful during their breast cancer treatments. Mrs. Jennings said the group has received monetary support from several organizations, businesses and individuals, which is used to pay for costs associated with their efforts. They have a fund set up through the Community Foundation of Northwest Missouri, allowing tax-exempt donations to be received. The group also sponsors “Pink Out” events at area school districts, which not only promotes awareness of breast cancer but allows the group to sell t-shirts as a fundraiser. A “store” that provides items such as prosthetics, wigs, bras, etc. for cancer patients is also located at the Community Action Partnership of Northwest Missouri (formerly Community Action Agency) and all available items are distributed at no cost.
Mrs. Jennings also told about a recent honor the group has received through Cenex Corp., involving its work and the community and resulting in a donation to the organization. Additional information about the award is to be made public by Cenex at a later date.
Scott Wilson, manager of Grundy Electric Cooperative, will present the program at the Jan. 23 club meeting.
