Trenton Boys Hang For A Half, Get Rolled In Second

Jan 8, 2020 | Basketball, Sports & Recreation

For one half, the Trenton High School boys basketball team hung tough with one of the top teams in the Grand River Conference’s East Division.
In the end, though, the Bulldogs were on the wrong end of an 88-47 romp on the road at Gallatin.
Despite the lopsided final, Trenton put together a strong first half, running up 19 points in the opening frame. That left the Bulldogs with a two-point lead after the initial eight minutes and, even after some regression in the second quarter, Trenton trailed just 40-30 at halftime.
“At halftime we talked about our effort being great in the first half,” Trenton coach Corbin Coe said. “That is the way we have to compete at all times, whether it is games or practice, that is how we have to compete. I thought our effort level and execution in the first half was a lot better.”
In the second half, however, the wheels fell off for Trenton. Gallatin went off for an improbable 34-9 third quarter run to put away a game that appeared up for grabs at the break. Gallatin closed out the contest with a 14-8 fourth-quarter run to pick up the victory.
Trenton’s shaky second half sent the Bulldogs to their ninth loss of the season, dropping them to 2-9 overall and 0-3 within the GRC.
“It’s putting it all together for 32 minutes,” Coe said. “Whenever we lead after a quarter and you are relatively close at halftime, you can’t come out in the third quarter and turn the ball over and allow Gallatin to get some easy buckets and have the lead balloon on you in a short amount of time. You have to have the committment and the focus for 32 minutes. It’s tough, but we are going to continue to get better at it.”
Trenton was led by 24 points from Brycin Loyd while Jaren Whitney added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists and Preston Harris finished with six points and three assists. Royce Jackson chipped in three points, seven rebounds and two blocks and Chase Otto rounded out the Bulldogs’ total with two points while also pulling down five rebounds.
Trenton will look to bounce back tonight (Friday), taking on Maysville in another road GRC test. Action tips with a girls game at 6 o’clock and the boys will follow.
