Foster care was the topic of a program presented to the Trenton Rotary Club on Thursday, Jan. 2. Tom Witten was the program chairman.
Brittany Lutz, a family development specialist with Cornerstones of Care, was the guest speaker. Cornerstone has contracted with the state of Missouri to work with the Department of Family Services on foster care issues. Ms. Lutz noted that more than 3,000 children in northwest Missouri are in need of foster care services but that there is a shortage of foster parents to provide a place for those who have been removed from their regular homes due to abuse or neglect. Cornerstone helps find a place for these children to go. There are just three homes available for long-term foster care in Grundy County, however, both long-term and short-term (respite) homes are needed. She outlined the qualifications for an individual or family to become a foster care provider, which does include state-mandated training provided by Cornerstone. She also briefly discussed volunteer opportunities available for those who want to help in ways besides becoming a foster care provider.
Representatives from Wright Memorial Hospital will present the Jan. 9 program on medical billing.
