In the end, though, it was South Harrison who got the big run late.
Trenton faded away in the fourth quarter, falling 68-56 in Grand River Conference play on the road.
It was the seventh loss of the year for Trenton and the sixth in a row, but this one felt different – even if the end result wasn’t.
Trenton avoided the horrific first quarter that has plagued the Bulldogs in each of their past two games and actually held a 13-11 advantage after the initial eight minutes. Trenton was able to take advantage of a quick pace in the second quarter and led 25-20 before South Harrison began to effectively slow the game down. When the pace slowed, so did Trenton as South Harrison closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 30-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Trenton began to drift away midway through the third quarter as the South Harrison lead grew. By the end of the third, Trenton trailed by 10 points and would get no closer, falling by the 12-point margin.
The Bulldogs were led by 19 points from Chase Otto and Royce Jackson added 16 points and nine rebounds. Brycin Loyd had nine points and five assists, Gavin Roeder had six points, Jaren Whitney had four points and five steals and Preston Harris rounded out the team’s total with two points.
With the loss, Trenton’s mark in conference play dropped to 0-2.
The Bulldogs will have their hands full on Saturday as they take on the Smithville Warriors at NCMC’s Holiday Hoops. Tip off at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
