Trenton Boys Close Tournament With Losses

Dec 9, 2019 | Basketball, Sports & Recreation

The Trenton High School boys basketball team continues to take strides toward improvement, but a 20-4 Polo run in the second quarter on Saturday ultimately cost the Bulldogs a third-place trophy.
In the end, Trenton suffered a 68-58 loss to the Panthers in the third-place game of the Gallatin Tournament.
The Bulldogs led 21-16 after the first quarter and outscored the Panthers by a single point in the second half, but the second quarter loomed large at the final buzzer.
Despite the loss, Trenton coach Corbin Coe was pleased with his team’s work outside of a nine-minute stretch where things really unraveled for his squad.
“This was by far the best game overall that we have played,” Coe said. “The second quarter was 20-4. We had about a nine-minute lapse where we didn’t control it. If you take away those nine minutes then we are okay. It was just one of those things where we couldn’t get stops and (Polo) continued on scoring.”
Trenton was led by 15 points and four assists from Brycin Loyd. Royce Jackson added 13 points and 11 rebounds and Jaren Whitney had 12 points and three steals. Trenton also got 11 points from Chase Otto, five from Camdyn Leeper and two from Gavin Roeder, who also added five assists.
With the loss, Trenton fell to 1-3 overall on the season.
WINSTON 68, TRENTON 37
The Bulldogs hung tough with Winston – the four-time defending Gallatin Tournament champions – through one quarter on Thursday in the semifinals. Trenton trailed 11-9 after the initial eight minutes, but Winston used a 21-6 second quarter run to take control and a 25-9 Redbird run in the third quarter sealed the Bulldogs’ fate.
Whitney’s 12 points and three assists led Trenton, which also got nine points from Loyd and four each from Roeder, Otto and Kayden Spencer. Jackson and Leeper each had two points apiece.
Trenton hosts Marceline tonight (Tuesday) following a girls’ match-up between the two schools, which tips off at 6 o’clock.
