The Grundy County boys came up short in their bid for a season-opening victory Monday, falling 66-60 to Linn County at home in Galt.
The Panthers fell behind early as Linn County raced out to a 21-11 first quarter lead, but the Panthers chipped away at the deficit and had a lead of their own late in the game. Linn County would go back up, but a pair of Grundy free throws tied the game and forced overtime.
The Panthers couldn’t get any traction in the bonus period, however. Grundy lost three starters to fouls between the fourth quarter and overtime and Linn County outscored the Panthers 10-4 in the bonus frame.
Cooper Lewis led the Panthers with 21 points and 15 rebounds in the loss while Gann added 17 points and six steals. Robert Urich had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Grundy (0-1) will be in the Novinger Tournament next week.
