The Trenton Middle School football team was defeated for the first time this season, falling 20-0 to Putnam County on the road in Unionville on Monday.
Trenton, playing without a handful of starters injured last week against Gallatin, struggled to hold on to the ball, fumbling four times. Putnam County returned the game’s opening kickoff for a touchdown and held the 6-0 edge into the third quarter before Trenton’s defense allowed a touchdown for the first time all night. The Midgets added one more score in the fourth quarter to take the game by the 20-0 margin.
“I’m proud of our effort on defense this evening,” Trenton Head Coach Jon Guthrie said. “(Assistant) Coach Trey Shields had a good defensive plan, and is doing a great job. The defense held Putnam to only 2.1 yards per carry. We need to continue to improve, though, on our pass defense.”
Offensively, Gabe Stark led Trenton in the absence of leading rusher Gabe Novak, going for 128 yards. Brayden Hughs added 53 yards on the ground.
Trenton fell to 2-1 overall with the loss. The Bulldogs will host Princeton next Monday at 5 p.m.
Trenton’s junior varsity team was also shut out in Unionville, falling 24-0. Trenton’s JV, now 1-2 overall, will also host Princeton next Monday at C.F. Russell Stadium.
