That all changed on Thursday as the Bulldogs scored their first run rule victory of the season – a 12-0 bludgeoning of visiting Gallatin at Griffin Field in Trenton.
If Trenton had their choice, though, it would take the one- and two-run ballgames over the blowouts.
“I think I like the other games better, but Gallatin is young,” Trenton Head Coach Joel Hultman said. “They are going to have a good program here in a couple of years. I know their middle school program has got some prospects coming up and their coaching staff does a great job. We are just in a different place than they are right now.”
Trenton jumped on the visitors early, netting four runs, all scoring with two outs, in the first frame. The Bulldogs batted all nine in its lineup in the opening inning and stole four bases, a trend that would continue throughout the night.
The Bulldogs wound up with 12 stolen bases in the contest, constantly putting runners in scoring position for an offense that collected 13 hits and 11 RBIs in the game.
“We had a couple of lulls (in baserunning) when we went to Princeton,” Hultman said. “Even though we won, it was a close game and we made some mistakes. So, in practice the other day we talked about it and then ran through a drill. If they don’t run through it well then they have to do it a second time and they only had to run it one time yesterday. I know that they know what to do, but sometimes, in the moment, the adrenaline gets going, so it was good to see them running the way they did tonight.”
On a night when the entire lineup shined, Chandler Lynch had one of her better nights at the plate this season. The sophomore third baseman was three-for-four with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
“I’ve been struggling a lot over the past few games, so we worked really hard in practice to keep my hands above the ball so I don’t pop up,” Lynch said. “That really helped a lot to go back to the fundamentals.”
McKayla Blackburn had another good showing both offensively and defensively. At the plate she was three-for-three with two RBIs, two runs scored and three stolen bases. In the circle, she recorded a five-inning shutout, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five.
Gracyn Rongey was two-for-two with three runs, three RBIs and three steals. Teya Cooksey went two-for-three with two runs, an RBI and two steals.
Trenton moved to 5-3 overall with the win and pushed its conference mark to 3-1.
Trenton will be on the road on Monday, traveling to Hamilton and will be back in GRC action on Tuesday, hosting South Harrison. The first pitch at Griffin Field in Trenton is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
