The Trenton High School girls golf team picked up win number one on Thursday, hosting and defeating the Chillicothe Hornets at the Riverside Country Club.
In a dual where each team played just four golfers, Trenton carded a score of 239 to better its rivals’ mark of 247.
“I was very happy with how we played,” Trenton Coach Travis Mullenix said. “It’s nice to get a win under our belt in our first home match, especially against Chillicothe.”
Maci Henson led the Bulldogs, carding a score of 52. That total was runner-up to Chillicothe’s Hallie Jones, who won medalist honors at the dual with a score of 45.
“Maci is really driving the ball well right now,” Mullenix said. “She is very close to breaking 50 if she can get her short game going. I’m happy with where she is, but look forward to her shaving a few strokes off around the green. She’ll be pretty tough when she gets that figured out.”
Oakley Madden followed Henson, carding a score of 59. Josie Chumbley finished at 62 and Mari Atup rounded out the team total with a 66.
“Oakley has had a couple of nice rounds in a row and I feel like she is ready to turn the corner,” Mullenix said. “She, too, has struggled with her putting, at times, but is working to find her touch on and around the greens.
“Josie and Mari are starting to figure some things out and are hitting shots that they didn’t have in their bag last year. They are shortening the course a little bit and that is showing on their scorecards which makes the game even more fun.”
Trenton moved to 1-1 overall on the season with the win.
The Bulldogs hosted Marceline on Monday, and teed off today, (Tuesday) at the Lawson Tournament at 9 a.m.
