Efforts to revitalize the arts n the area was the topic of a program presented during last Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Dr. Lenny Klaver was the program chairman.
Phil Schlarb, who has been leading the effort, addressed the club about plans under way to form an organization similar to the Grundy County Friends of the Arts, which would coordinate arts-related offerings to area residents. With the recent approval by voters in the Trenton R-9 School District to build a performing arts center as part of an overall building project, Schlarb said interest in such a venture has grown to the point that two planning meetings have been held. A committee is currently reviewing possible names for the organization while a second committee is putting together proposed bylaws that would eventually lead to incorporating a not-for-profit organization that would be in charge of the arts effort. Another meeting is being planned for 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30 in the Cross Hall Coffee Shop on the North Central Missouri College campus to continue the planning efforts and interested members of the community are encouraged to attend.
Nathan Vandevender, who works in the IT Department at NCMC, also spoke about the Foreign Film Club, which was organized by NCMC instructor Eric Christopherson and himself. The club recently held a showing of the Japanese movie, “In the Mood For Love,” which he said was very well received, with 18 persons in attendance. Plans are to show foreign films during the school year that would also be open to the public.
Dr. Klaver also spoke about other efforts at NCMC to promote arts, which is among the initiatives being addressed by the college and board of trustees as a way to draw more students and members of the community to the campus.
The Rotary Club will meet again on Thursday, May 16, with Mayor Linda Crooks as the speaker.
