Ewing, Burchett Lead Trenton At District Meet

May 13, 2019 | Sports & Recreation, Track

A year ago, Trenton sprinter Brian Ewing just missed going to state. This year, he heads to sectionals as a frontrunner in three events.
Ewing won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes on Saturday at the Class 3, District 8 track meet, setting himself up to break through at sectionals and punch his ticket to Jefferson City. Ewing won the 100 with a time of 11.36, the 200 with a time of 22.96 and the 400 with a time of 51.58. For good measure, he also advanced in the long jump, where he was fourth with a leap of 19-9.
“It was expected by me,” Trenton boys Coach Lysander Overstreet said. “I knew the hard work he had put in this season which has helped him shine like he is supposed to. I expect him to do the same again this Saturday. The competition is a little bit better pooling both districts together, but I think he will have a good day.”
Ewing wasn’t Trenton’s only gold medalist either. Carson Burchett placed first in the shot put with a throw of 49-0. He achieved the distance on his last throw of the meet.
“Carson has had his ups and downs throughout the season and he kind of pulled it together,” Overstreet said. “It was a clutch throw and I think it gives him confidence going into sectionals this weekend. I think he has a great shot, if he continues to work this week and we will work this week, to make it to state this year.”
Also qualifying for sectionals for the Bulldogs were hurdlers Matt Sibbit and Camdyn Leeper. Sibbit was third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.07 and Leeper was right behind him, placing fourth with a time of 17.54. Hayden Griffin also advanced for the Bulldogs, placing third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.96.
Other placewinners for Trenton at districts, who didn’t advance to sectionals, included Leeper, sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.28, and Hunter Trask, who was sixth in the shot put with a throw of 43-0 and sixth in the discus with a throw of 126-7.
In the team standings, Trenton collected 74 points, good for a sixth-place showing in the 12-team field. Maryville won the boys title with 133 points while Lawson (118) and Hogan Prep (107) rounded out the top three. Richmond was fourth with 87 points and Chillicothe placed fifth with 86.5.
Sectionals will be held this Saturday in Excelsior Springs. The top four in each event at that meet will advance to state the following weekend at Pete Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.
