Tennis Team Still Undefeated

Apr 23, 2019 | Sports & Recreation, Tennis

The Trenton High School tennis team endured the biggest threat to its undefeated record on Monday, escaping with a 5-4 home victory over the Kirksville Tigers.
Trenton had its hands full with Kirksville, falling behind 2-1 after doubles play for just the second time in seven duals. Gabe Swann and Jeremy Elliott combined for an 8-1 win, but Nick Shields and Creed Houghton were defeated 8-5 and Isaac Harris and Jonin Villacampa fell 8-4.
As was the case the only other time Trenton faced adversity through doubles play, the Bulldogs bounced back in singles play with the top of the lineup dominating their matches.
Shields was an 8-3 winner at number one while Swann won his number-two match 8-0. Houghton and Elliott each won 8-3 at number three and four, respectively, to seal the dual victory for Trenton and keep the Bulldogs undefeated. Harris and Weston Otto were each defeated 8-5 to close out singles play and pull the visitors within a single match in the final score.
“This was an extremely close dual with Kirksville and I don’t expect anything less from our Highway 6 rivals,” Trenton Coach David Sager said. “We will see them again next week on the road, so I look forward to another close dual that could go either way for both teams. This was a great team win for our program and the dual came down to us needing just one win out of our last two matches on the courts. Houghton played a great singles match to secure the team victory.”
Trenton is at home again today, taking on Lafayette.
