Trenton Girls Upended In Brookfield

Apr 19, 2019 | Sports & Recreation, Track

After five straight meet victories to start the season, the Trenton High School girls track and field team was defeated for the first time in 2019 Thursday at the Brookfield Relays. Trenton finished second in the girls team standings with a season-low 98.5 points as Marceline claimed the title in Brookfield with 127 points.
Trenton won three events at the meet and piled up points in the sprints as is customary, but a deep field of 21 schools inhibited Trenton’s ability to double place in events as it normally does. Only in the discus, where Kendall Crowley was third with a throw of 108-3 and Salem Croy was eighth with a mark of 100-4, did Trenton double place.
Trenton bested Marceline by nearly 10 seconds in the final event of the meet – the 4×400-meter relay – but at that point the team title had already been decided with Marceline holding a healthy advantage.
Lexi Whitaker, Kristi Ewing, Lexi Gott and McKayla Blackburn won the 4×400 with a time of 4:18.64. Ewing, Whitaker and Gott teamed with Chandler Lynch to add a gold medal in the 4×200-meter relay with a time of 1:52.75.
Whitaker won Trenton’s only individual gold medal at the meet, placing first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.66. She was also third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.14. Ewing, meanwhile, was second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.91 and third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.68.
While Whitaker and Ewing anchored Trenton’s performance on the track, the Bulldogs had placewinners in five other events on the track as well. The 4×800-meter relay team of Blackburn, Gwyneth Foster, Katie Markell and Gracyn Rongey finished third with a time of 11:32.6. Rongey was also fourth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:25.55, Foster was fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:46.56 and Markell finished eighth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 14:28.84.
Trenton’s 4×100-meter relay team of Gott, Emma Curtis, Mykah Hurley and Shay Westerhof rounded out Trenton’s placewinners on the track, placing sixth with a time of 55.62.
In the field, Croy added a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 105-4 to her eighth-place showing in the discus. Maci Moore was fourth in the high jump with a mark of 4-10, fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 30-10.5 and eighth in the shot put with a throw of 32-10.
Other placewinners in the field for Trenton were Bailea Jeanoutot, tied for sixth in the pole vault after clearing 6-6, and Curtis, seventh in the long jump with a mark of 14-8.75.
TRENTON BOYS
While Trenton’s girls struggled to double place at the meet, the Trenton boys built their day around double-placing. The Bulldogs placed two athletes in four different events, collecting 70 points to place fourth in the 21-team field.
Brian Ewing and Hayden Griffin each placed in the 100-200- and 400-meter dashes. Ewing was first in the 400-meter dash, capturing Trenton’s lone gold medal at the meet with a time of 51.49. He was second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, doing so with times of 11.9 and 23.67 respectively. Griffin followed Ewing in all three events, placing eighth in the 100 with a time of 12.25, sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.84 and eighth in the 400 with a time of 55.01.
Trenton double-placed in the shot put as well where Jadan Whitney was second with a throw of 49-2 and Carson Burchett was seventh with a mark of 44-8. Whitney added a sixth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 138-8.
Matt Sibbit gave Trenton points in both hurdle races. He was second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.85 and third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.44.
Other placewinners for the Trenton boys included Dylan Harris, fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 38-5.5; the 4×400-meter relay team of Harris, Griffin, Sibbit and Camdyn Leeper, fifth with a time of 3:50.62; Kayden Spencer, sixth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:05.39; and the 4×800-meter relay team of Leeper, Dalton Burchett, Quentin Hughs and Spencer, eighth with a time of 10:20.26.
Trenton’s track and field teams return to action on Monday, running at the Nick Sloop Relays in Lawson. Trenton will travel to St. Joseph on Tuesday for the LeBlond Relays.
