It was a tough day for the Trenton High School baseball team on Friday as the Bulldogs fell 18-1 in four innings to North Harrison at Burleigh Grimes Field.
Things started out well as starter Chase Otto breezed through the first inning. After a run in the bottom of the first, Trenton held a 1-0 advantage over the visiting Shamrocks.
Things went bad quickly from that point on, however. Otto couldn’t get out of the second inning and Sam Schilling didn’t fare much better in relief. The Shamrocks struck for seven runs in the second and it didn’t end there. Canyon VonBurg and Tanner Lynch scuffled on the hill for the Bulldogs as well as North Harrison plated five more runs in the third and sixth in the fourth to end the game by the 15-run rule.
“(North Harrison’s) top of the lineup was really good, one through four,” Trenton Head Coach Joel Hultman said. “They put the bat on the ball and hit the ball really, really hard. They are a quality squad with a good coaching staff and they could do some damage in the playoffs. I’m not sure what their district looks like, but they are a pretty good team.”
North Harrison scored its 18 runs on 12 hits and 12 walks issued by Trenton pitchers.
“We walked too many guys, but we are going to try and bear down and get that fixed,” Hultman said. “It’s either mechanical or between the ears, but listen, my guys are trying really hard and we are trying to get better. We are young and we haven’t played a lot of baseball, so the big thing for us is to stay patient and control the things that we can control and not make the same mistakes over and over again. That’s what we are talking about, trying to get to a place where the other team only gets three outs. The pitchers have to do better, but they will.”
Otto took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits and five walks while striking out one.
At the plate, Trenton had three hits, coming from Jerrick Stotts and Quincy Griffin, who had two hits, both of which were doubles. Tanner Lynch scored Trenton’s lone run, scoring on an RBI double by Griffin in the first inning.
With the loss, Trenton dropped to 2-4 overall on the season.
The Bulldogs looked to bounce back on Monday, playing host to North Andrew in a Grand River Conference match-up at Burleigh Grimes Field. Trenton is also in action on Friday, traveling to Milan for another GRC contest with the Wildcats. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
