The North Central Missouri Regional Water Commission has been awarded the Missouri Rural Water Association’s Waterdrop Award for Excellence as the 2019 Source Water Protection System of the Year.
A Source Water Protection Plan is an outline of goals and measures to be taken to maintain and enhance clean water in a drinking water source. The commission’s SWPP was prepared in anticipation of the construction of the 2,338-acre East Locust Creek Reservoir, which will provide a clean, reliable and economical water source to a 10-county area in north central Missouri.
Greg Pitchford of Allstate Consultants, Inc., along with an advisory committee made up of Sullivan County residents, led the SWPP work, which is required as a precursor to receiving a drinking water permit. Members of the Advisory Committee included Cully Cowgill, John Watt, Phyllis Blondefield, Robert Jaques, Andy Herington, Donnie Campbell and Jim Hoselton.
The SWPP identified potential contaminants sources as well as measures to be taken to mitigate or eliminate contamination. It also focused on mitigating or eliminating erosion to reduce sedimentation.
The East Locust Creek Reservoir is in the final stretch before construction with permitting and final financing being addressed and negotiated.
