Sammy J. Lewellen Sr., an 85-year-old Trenton resident, died at 4:46 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019 at Wright Memorial Hospital in Trenton.
The body was cremated under the direction of Whitaker-Eads Funeral Home of Trenton. A private memorial service will be held later.
Mr. Lewellen was born on Aug. 16, 1933 in Attica, IN, the son of Alvin and Marie Mae Sims Lewellen Sr. He graduated from Attica High School. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army. He was also awarded a Purple Heart, the National Defense Medal, the U.N. Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Combat Medical Badge and ROK Korean War Service Medal for his service.
He was married in Trenton on April 21, 1954 to Mary Carolyn Ellis, who preceded him in death on July 27, 2007.
He is survived by his children, Sammy Lewellen Jr. of Trenton, Martha Thrun and her husband, Larry of Trenton, Carol Jordan of Kingston, Martin Lewellen and his wife, Renee of Des Moines, IA, Jimmy Lewellen of Trenton, Kevin Lewellen of Trenton and Jeffery Lewellen of Chillicothe; two brothers, Alvin Lewellen of Chillicothe and Ted Lewellen of Brookston, IN; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
