The Trenton High School girls basketball team finally got its match-up with Milan over the weekend. The game, originally scheduled for Jan. 18, was moved four times before it was played on Friday. As if the four date changes weren’t enough, the time of the game was moved to 4 p.m. after originally being set for the traditional 6 o’clock start.
Trenton had captured the Grand River Conference championship with a win over Stanberry in Bethany six days earlier, but still could have finished second in the GRC’s East Division had Milan pulled off an upset. Trenton didn’t get off to the best of starts, but had more than enough firepower to deny Milan a claim to a division title, winning 67-34.
From the onset, Milan made it clear that Maci Moore was their target of concern, daring Trenton to beat them with the outside shot. Trenton fired up plenty of three-point attempts, but the only one that found the net in the opening quarter was a buzzer-beater by Tolson that was waived off because it hit a rafter at the peak of the arc. The Bulldogs led just 8-7 after one quarter of play.
Trenton kept shooting, but again was 0-for from the three-point line in the second quarter. The Bulldogs were able to overcome the shooting woes with some transition points and dribble drives, pushing the advantage to 30-16 by halftime. An 11-0 run to start the second half gave Trenton a commanding 41-16 lead and by the end of the third quarter the lead was 30.
Trenton cruised through the final frame, wrapping up the first perfect regular-season in school history with a spotless 21-0 record.
Trenton was just six-for-23 from the three-point line, but got plenty of offense in the end with four players reaching double figures. Ainsley Tolson led the way with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals and Mykah Hurley added 16 points, three assists and four steals. Trenton got 12 points each from Salem Croy and Moore with Croy adding five rebounds and Moore pulling down eight boards. Sidney Lynch had eight points and seven rebounds and McKayla Blackburn rounded out the team’s total with two points.
Trenton opens district tonight, facing Carrollton at 4:30.
