The Grundy R-5 High School basketball teams opened play at the Class 1, District 12 Tournament at Linn County in Purdin on Saturday. The Grundy girls survived with a 44-31 win over host Linn County while the Grundy boys saw their season end with a 67-34 loss to Green City.
In the girls game, Morgan Axtell led the Panthers with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Aubrey Gann had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Alissa Webb added eight points, seven rebounds and two assists. Grundy also got six points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals from Brianna Carpio.
The Grundy girls will see district semifinal action against Brashear on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. in Purdin.
The boys contest, meanwhile, saw Cooper Lewis pace the Panthers with 13 points.
Both Grundy teams were dealt losses by Meadville on Thursday night at home in Galt. Meadville won the girls game 53-49 and the boys game 69-53.
For the girls, Axtell had 23 points, 11 rebounds and three assists for the girls while Gann added 12 points, 13 rebounds and three steals and Webb finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
Against Meadville, Grundy’s boys got 26 points from Caden Gann and 16 points and 10 rebounds from Lewis.
