Saturday was a busy day for the Trenton wrestling program and a historic one at that. Trenton’s female wrestlers traveled to Smithville for the first-ever District 4 Girls Wrestling Tournament. While Teresa Yoder and Libby Fewins were competing at that event, Trenton’s male wrestlers were competing at the Lexington Dual Tournament.
GIRLS DISTRICTS
The two Trenton wrestlers at the District 4 Girls Wrestling Tournament had their hands full as MSHSAA has just one class statewide for girls wrestling. A total of 38 schools competed at the girls district tournament, most from larger schools.
At 126 pounds, Yoder went 1-2 at the tournament. After dropping her opening-round match to a Winnetonka wrestler, Yoder bounced back with a 13-1 major decision victory over Savannah’s Sage Pankau. That would be the only win of the day for Trenton at the event, however, as Yoder was eliminated in the next round, falling by pin to a Lafayette opponent.
Fewins was 0-2, suffering losses to wrestlers from Platte City and Kearney.
“Three young ladies from Trenton made history by taking a chance and coming out for wrestling this year,” Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “Ann Airey, Teresa Yoder and Elizabeth Fewins are those three. Due to a mid-season injury, Ann was not able to compete this weekend at the district tournament, but Teresa and Libby did. I couldn’t be more happy and proud the way these girls represented Trenton not only this weekend, but throughout the whole season on the first ever THS girls wrestling team.”
LEXINGTON TOURNEY
Trenton’s boys wrestling team was 2-2 at the Lexington Dual Tournament, placing fourth out of eight teams at the event. Trenton picked up a 47-24 win over Tipton and a 48-15 win over Lexington. The Bulldog losses came by a 60-12 score to Lawson and a 45-24 result against Brookfield.
Jadan Whitney led the Bulldogs at the tournament with a 4-0 record. Brice Gibler, Kaden Owen, Noah Lewis and Mark Trump all finished the day with 3-1 records and freshman Caleb Johnson and Jarvis Collins each had a 2-2 record on the day.
“Our boys really looked good today,” Bacon said. “With four open weights, a dual style format is not the best fit for our team this year, but every kid on this team has learned to compensate by getting pins and scoring those bonus points when it counts. We have to keep this going Monday night against Chillicothe at home, and at the district tournament on Friday and Saturday.”
UP NEXT
Trenton was at home on Monday, playing host to Chillicothe on Senior Night for the wrestling team. The Bulldogs will be at the Class 1, District 3 Tournament in Higginsville on Friday and Saturday.
