Hurley Breaks School Steals Record, Trenton Rolls

Jan 11, 2019 | Basketball, Sports & Recreation

In semifinal action at the Lawson Tournament on Thursday, the Trenton High School girls basketball team crushed North Platte 66-19 behind another strong defensive night – typical for the Bulldogs.
Leading the defensive effort was Mykah Hurley, who collected eight steals and pushed her career total to 315 – a mark that broke Amber Vandevender’s school record of 312 career steals.
“We really played well, especially on the defensive end of the court,” THS Head Coach Brian Upton said. “Mykah broke the school record for steals with eight in the game. She has great anticipation and is so good at pressuring her player and being in the proper spot on the help side. She places herself in position to make big plays defensively.”
Trenton yielded 11 points to North Platte in the first quarter, leading 23-11 after the initial eight-minute run. But, the Bulldogs really flexed their muscles defensively from that point on. The Panthers scored just four points in the second quarter and were limited to just two points in the third and two more in the fourth.
“(North Platte) got some open looks in the first quarter, but from then on we really tightened down on defense,” Upton said.
On the offensive side, Trenton racked up 66 points, mirroring the Bulldogs’ output from the opening round win against West Platte on Monday. Ainsley Tolson led the charge on this night, scoring 22 points to go with 11 rebounds, three assists and four steals. Maci Moore had 17 points and five rebounds and Lexi Whitaker added 11 points.
Trenton also got eight points and two steals from Salem Croy and five points and six assists from Hurley to go with her eight steals. Two points and 12 rebounds from Sidney Lynch and one point from Taylor Richman rounded out the Trenton total.
The Bulldogs will play for a third-straight Lawson Tournament championship against Hamilton, which narrowly escaped host Lawson in the semifinals, winning 55-52.
The championship game was scheduled for Saturday, but it will now be played at a later date after Saturday’s action at the Lawson Tournament was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Trenton will travel to Polo on Tuesday for Grand River Conference action. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
