Trenton Goes 2-1 In Polo

On Thursday in Polo, The Trenton High School wrestling team ran a 2-1 record, picking up a 34-27 win over Macon and a 48-16 win over Polo while falling 48-24 to Marceline.
vs. MACON
The Bulldogs opened with Macon. After a double forfeit at 120, Trenton grabbed an early lead with wins by fall from Brice Gibler at 126 and Payden McCullough at 132. Macon battled back as Dakota Wendt lost by fall at 138 and Kaden Owen dropped a 6-4 decision at 145. Trenton was open at 152, allowing Macon to jump in front for the first time in the dual, leading 15-12.
A 9-0 major decision victory from Noah Lewis at 160 put Trenton back in front and Mark Trump returned to the lineup to score a win by fall at 170, pushing Trenton’s advantage to seven points. After Caleb Johnson was pinned at 182, both teams were open at 195 as Jadan Whitney went up to 220 to get a match. He scored a win by fall to give Trenton the dual victory.
Jarvis Collis was pinned at 285 by Macon’s Caden Phillips – the third ranked heavyweight in the state at the Class 1 level. It mattered little as the Tigers were open at 106 and 113. Trenton’s one-point lead grew to 34-27 following a win by forfeit for Thomas Lovell at 106 and 113 was a double forfeit to round out the Bulldog victory.
vs. MARCELINE
The Bulldogs had their hands full in their second dual of the night, facing Marceline, ranked second in the state as a team with a lineup that boasts six state-ranked wrestlers.
The dual stared at 126, where Gibler was pinned by Colton Fisher, the fifth-ranked wrestler at that weight. McCullough evened the dual score with a win by fall at 132, but Marceline took three of the next four matches to surge ahead. Mason Barnett, ranked eighth at 145, wrestled down to 138 and pinned Wendt. Owen was pinned at 145 and Cullen Bruner, ranked third in the state at 160, pinned Lewis. Both schools were open at 152.
Down 24-6, Trenton got a win by forfeit from Trump at 170, but Johnson was pinned at 182 by Seth Cupp, ranked fourth in the state at the weight. Whitney won by fall at 195 and Collis won by forfeit. Those were the final points of the dual as the Bulldogs yielded points due to open weights at 220 and 113. At 106, Lovell was pinned by Jace Bixenman, the ninth-ranked wrestler in the state at that weight. Both schools were also open at 120.
vs. POLO
Trenton capped the night with an easy win over host Polo, which featured nine open weights in its lineup.
Only four matches were contested on the mat with Trenton going 2-2 in those matches. Wendt was pinned at 138 while Owen and Lewis scored wins by fall at 145 and 160, respectively. Trump lost by a 15-6 major decision at 170.
Polo picked up a forfeit win at 152 to round out its total. Trenton won by forfeit at 106, 126, 132, 182, 195 and 285. Both schools were open at 113, 120 and 220.
GIRLS
In girls action, Trenton’s Teresa Yoder was pinned in a 126-pound match-up with Marceline while Libby Fewins won by an 8-5 decision at 167.
UP NEXT
Weather permitting, Trenton will wrestle at the Plattsburg Tournament on Saturday. That event is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
Trenton’s wrestlers will be at home for the first time this season on Tuesday, hosting the Trenton Triangular with Brookfield and Richmond. The event is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
