Trenton Police Officer Escapes Serious Injury; Two Charged In Incident

Jan 7, 2019 | Headline News

A sergeant with the Trenton Police Department escaped serious injury Saturday when he was dragged by a vehicle as the driver fled a traffic stop.
Sgt. Matt Preston had stopped a red Ford Mustang driven by Duane Shiner, a 30-year-old Lexington resident, shortly before 7 a.m. in the 900 block of Olive Street in Trenton. Shiner, who was accompanied by 23-year-old Katie Corum of Trenton, had an active parole warrant for a previous charge of possession of a controlled substance and when Sgt. Preston attempted to arrest him, Shiner fled in his vehicle, dragging the officer on East Ninth Court for approximately one block. As Shiner fled, he drove his vehicle toward Det. Jerry Smith as he exited his patrol car and then fled northbound on Laclede Street. Sgt. Preston was taken to Wright Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the incident and was released.
Approximately nine hours later, Shiner’s vehicle was observed on Route Y near the intersection with Route O. As Shiner turned eastbound onto Highway O, Deputy Seth Cox identified Shiner and activated his lights and siren in an attempt to stop Shiner. Shiner failed to yield and increased his speed to over 100 miles per hour, straddling the center line and occupying both lanes of traffic. As the vehicle approached the intersection of Northeast 70th Avenue and Highway 6, the defendant exited the vehicle while it was still moving and fled on foot, being apprehended by law enforcement officers at that time.
Shiner, who will be returned to the Missouri Department of Corrections due to his parole violation, has been charged with two counts of class A felony first degree assault (special victim) for his assault of Sgt. Preston and Det. Smith, as well as two class E felony counts of resisting arrest, and property damage, a class D felony. Sgt. Preston’s shirt, body armor vest, boots, radio, radio holster, handcuff holster and flashlight were all damaged in the altercation.
Ms. Corum is being held on $5,000 cash-only bond, charged with hindering the prosecution of a felony, a class E felony. Both defendants are currently being held in the Grundy County Detention Center and are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, Jan. 8.
In addition to the police department and sheriff’s department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted with the investigation and apprehension of Shiner and Corum.
