Lindy Cooper, an 89-year-old resident of Silvis, IL, died at his home at Illini Towers on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018 with his wife and caregiver, Barb Cooper and his niece, Kelli Lawver by his side.
A memorial service will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 at the Illini Towers community room in Silvis. Cremation was conducted by Van Hoe Funeral Home.
Lindy was born on June 1, 1929 in Canton, IL, the son of Oral and Ida (Sims) Cooper. He grew up in Trenton and moved to the Quad City, IL area as a young man. He moved back to Trenton for a few years, lived in Dallas, TX and returned to the Quad Cities in the early 1990s.
He discovered his love of country music as a child and in the late 1950s played guitar and sang lead vocal with Paul Moneymaker and The Rainbow Valley Boys, who recorded “I’m Tired” and “Tomorrow I’ll Cry.” They also appeared on a Quad Cities television show. Most recently Lindy played in bands at Quad Cities nursing homes, elderly high rises and VFW and American Legion facilities. In 2017 he received the “Life Long Efforts in Country Music” award from the Mississippi Valley Country Western Music Association.
Lindy worked at Consumer Redi Mix for many years. He then worked in maintenance for apartment complexes in the Quad Cities and in Dallas- Fort Worth until he retired in 1988. Lindy married Barb Stroupe in 2004.
Survivors include his wife, Barb; three sons, Robert, Ron and Bill Cooper; two daughters, Linda Rogers and Gloria Cooper; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gary; a grandson, Gary Robert; and four sisters, Wilma Dzekunskas, Maxine Daniels, Jean LaFerrara and Patricia Herkert.
