If Thursday night’s showing at North Central Missouri College’s Holiday Hoops was any indication, however, the teams in the HDC Conference are going to have a hard time keeping Mercer from regaining its foothold atop the league.
Mercer bludgeoned La Plata 77-17 at the Ketcham Community Center, pushing its record on the season to 5-3 with all three losses all coming when Mercer jumped up to face Class 2 teams.
It became clear early on that La Plata wasn’t going to be able to hang with the Cardinals as Mercer scored at-will throughout the first half, leading by over 30 points at halftime.
Mercer didn’t let up after halftime either, pulling away down the stretch to take the game by 60 points.
Rayne Kost led the charge for Mercer, scoring 22 points in the win. Tori Meinecke followed with 20 points and Esabel Holt added 15.

In a much tougher game, the Mercer boys made it a sweep for the Cardinals, defeating the La Plata boys by five points.
Jon Johnson and Hunter Shipley scored 13 points each as Mercer picked up the victory.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 6-2 overall on the season.
