Trenton Travels To Marceline, Picks Up Two Victories

Dec 5, 2018 | Basketball, Sports & Recreation

Over an hour on a bus didn’t seem to have much of an effect on the Trenton High School basketball teams as the Bulldogs traveled to Marceline on Tuesday night and returned home with a sweep of the girls-boys varsity doubleheader. Neither game was all that competitive, either, as the Trenton girls scored a 77-40 victory and the Trenton boys followed with a 67-38 win.
TRENTON GIRLS
A career night for one player makes a team hard to beat. A career night for two players? Well, that results in final scores like the one Trenton’s high school girls basketball team put on Marceline on Tuesday.
Senior Ainsley Tolson scored a career-high 33 points and sophomore Maci Moore added a career-high 22 as Trenton blasted the Tigers on their home floor.
For Tolson, the 33-point night pushed her career total to 1,314, moving her past Lora Gooch (1,301) into second on Trenton’s all-time scoring list behind Rebekah Capeder, who finished her career in the Black and Gold with a record 1,390 points.
It became evident early on with Tolson, Moore and Mykah Hurley (who had 12 points on the night) scoring at will, Marceline wasn’t going to be able to hang around long. By the end of one quarter, Trenton already had a seemingly insurmountable 19-4 advantage. That lead would only grow from that point as Trenton scored over 20 points in each of the second and third quarters. By the time the game reached the final stanza, it was just a matter of getting the clock to zero as Trenton held a massive 40-point lead.
Trenton easily closed out the win, cruising to the finish line and moving to 5-0 overall on the season.
“We played extremely well on both ends of the court,” Trenton Head Coach Brian Upton said. “Ainsley and Mykah were very good, combining for 45 points, 11 assists and 10 steals. Maci was exceptional as well. The defense was a real team effort. We really made it difficult for (Marceline) to get good looks at the basket.”
Tolson added six assists and five steals to her 33 points while Hurley had five assists and five steals. Moore tacked on eight rebounds and five blocked shots.
Behind that trio, Trenton got three points, eight rebounds and three assists from Sidney Lynch and three points from Taylor Richman. Salem Croy and Lexi Whitaker had two points each and McKayla Blackburn tallied four assists.
TRENTON BOYS
The Trenton boys bounced back in a big way from their loss in the Gallatin Tournament championship game three days earlier. Trenton quickly put Marceline in the rear-view mirror, jumping out to a 22-11 lead in the opening eight minutes and pushing the advantage to 18 points by halftime. The Bulldogs outscored Marceline in both the third and fourth quarters as well as Trenton’s defense limited the home team to just nine points in the third and eight in the fourth.
“We passed the ball much better and I thought that our teamwork was a lot smoother than what we have been seeing,” Trenton Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “There were a lot of assists to go around, we did a much better job crashing boards and we had a lot of guys scoring points. Really, all-in-all, it was a lot closer to what we’ve been striving for than what we have seen so far this year.”
On such a positive night for the boys team, the only downside was an ankle injury suffered by guard Jaren Whitney. The injury took Whitney out of the game after he had posted four points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. His status for Trenton’s next game – Friday at Chillicothe – is unclear at this point.
Trenton was led by Max McNabb, who had 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists in the win. Carson Burchett added 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks and Dylan Harris had 12 points and five assists. The Bulldogs also got 11 points, three assists and two steals from Carson Radcliff and three points and two assists from Dalton Burchett. Isaac Harris had two points and four assists, Chase Otto had two points and Camdyn Leeper had two points as well.
With the win, the Trenton boys improved to 3-2 overall on the season.
UP NEXT
Both Trenton teams will get a look at Class 3, District 14 foe Chillicothe on Friday as Trenton travels south to take on the Hornets. Action will tip off with the girls game at 6 p.m. and the boys contest will follow.
