Edward Lee Newkirk, a 96-year-old former Trenton resident, died at 1:56 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018 at North Kansas City Hospital.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018 at Resthaven Mortuary in Trenton. Private inurnment will be held at a later date at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, north of Trenton.
An open viewing will begin on Friday morning, Nov. 9, 2018 at the mortuary.
Mr. Newkirk was born on Sept. 12, 1922 in Trenton, the son of Everett A. and Glena M. Newton Newkirk. He attended both Trenton and Nettleton schools before attending Stevenson Auto and Electrical School and U.S. Trade School for Diesel Engineers, both in Kansas City. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II from October 1942 until December 1945.
He was a member of the 39th Street Church of Christ in Independence and the Amalgamated Transit Union #1287.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Clara Belle Newkirk; a daughter, Marice Norris of Blue Summit; two grandchildren, William E. “Bill’ Norris of Overland Park, KS and Rebecca L. “Becky” Kaster and her husband, Buz of Kansas City, KS; six great-grandchildren, Thomas, Brandon, Isabella, DeAnn, Christal and Angie; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Juanita Bain; brothers, Ross, Glen, Albert and George Newkirk; a half-brother, Lloyde D. Klinginsmith; and a half-sister, Clarice Klinginsmith.
Memorial donations are suggested to either the Green Hills Animal Shelter or the donor’s choice and may be left at or mailed to the mortuary.
